Grooming Traineeships Information Sheet

What is a Grooming Traineeship?

A grooming traineeship is a government-recognised training program that creates a pathway for aspiring groomers to enter the industry. The trainee will gain the qualification ACM30122 Cert III in Animal Care Services Pet Grooming, while learning grooming skills and industry-based knowledge in a workplace environment. Trainees engage in a 2-year full-time (or part-time) commitment, receiving hands-on training on the job while completing theoretical components online. This setup offers a practical, mutually beneficial solution for both employers and trainees in the grooming industry, by creating qualified, experienced professionals.

Benefits of a Traineeship

Extended Learning Period:

Trainees receive two years to learn the skills thoroughly, reducing the pressure and stress associated with faster-paced training.

Regulated Training

Ensures that the industry maintains high standards as trainees finish with recognized qualifications.

Cost Efficiency

Course fees are greatly reduced and, depending on the state, may be Government subsided.

Guided Support:

Employers receive guidance on teaching methodologies, ensuring high-quality training.

Long-Term Commitment:

Trainees are committed to their employer, and vice versa, for the duration of the traineeship and typically beyond, providing stability and job security.

How It Works

01

Eligibility Criteria:

The trainee will be hired under a normal employment contract (full-time or part-time) by an eligible grooming business. The trainee must be supervised and supported by a supervisor who is qualified or has equivalent experience. This requires the business to have someone on hand who possesses the necessary expertise and skills to effectively mentor the trainee. This ensures the trainee will gain the necessary guidance and experience to become a qualified groomer at the end of the traineeship.

02

SIGN UP PROCESS:

The trainee is registered through an Apprenticeship Centre and signed up with a Registered Training Organization (RTO). The grooming business will arrange the appropriate paperwork to complete.

03

Training Strategy

The trainee will be taught all practical application ON THE JOB. The trainee is only needed to be at their place of work, they do not go to TAFE to learn their skills.. All theory is done online, and the RTO will organise assessment. The trainee is allocated one day of study per month (paid) to dedicate to online theory. The rest of the online theory is done in their own time. Employers are given a detailed training strategy to ensure the trainee learns effectively over two years, balancing practical business needs with educational outcomes.

Course Fees

The cost of the course varies by state and depends on available government subsidies. The course fee is heavily discounted when offered through a traineeship structure compared to completing the same course outside of a traineeship, and the RTO has available payment plans.

The decision on who pays the course fee—whether the employer or the employee—is mutually agreed upon. Typically, the trainee covers the cost since they will ultimately own the qualification. Payment plans are an option, making it feasible for the fee to be spread out weekly, ranging from $12 to $40 per week. This figure is a generalisation and will depend on the specific grooming business conditions. Ask your potential employer for actual figures.
